Moylan to oppose proposed amendments to gun laws

Wednesday, 17 December 2025

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan will be opposing the Minns Labor Government’s Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025 in Parliament this week.

Following the terror attack in Bondi on 14 December 2025, NSW Premier Chris Minns recalled Parliament for Monday and Tuesday to discuss changes to firearms laws.

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley introduced the Bill to Parliament on Monday.

Mr Moylan, who is a licensed shooter himself, is speaking on the Bill this afternoon.

He and the NSW Nationals are standing firm on their opposition to changes to legislation regarding firearms.

“What we witnessed in Bondi was a horrific act of mass violence that has brought great sadness to all Australians,” Mr Moylan said.

“But penalising lawful firearm owners, sporting shooters, farmers, and professional shooters – who already abide by some of the toughest gun laws in the world – makes no practical sense.

“The Minns Labor government appears intent on rushing through poorly drafted new gun laws that do nothing to address the real issue of extremism in NSW.

“I have spoken with representatives from shooting clubs, farmers, and recreational hunters, from across the Northern Tablelands who have not been consulted about the proposed amendments. They are very concerned about the detrimental effect these changes will have on their sports, and in some cases their livelihoods.

“I am calling on the Minns Government to pause this process and engage in genuine consultation with our regional communities to ensure any proposed legislation is effective, and responsive.”
