Media Release: Grant helps community centre serve up improvements

Thursday, 18 September 2025

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan is pleased to announce the Glen Innes and District Community Centre’s kitchen is set for a huge upgrade with funding from the Community Building Partnership program secured.

The GIDCC is a valuable part of the community which provides meals, social networks, services and more to a wide range of local people and groups.

The centre dishes out many meals per week and their meal preparation will now be a lot easier with a $51,571 grant to refurbish and update the current kitchen facilities.

“The Glen Innes and District Community Centre provides an important service by looking after the community’s most vulnerable people including seniors and people experiencing homelessness,” Mr Moylan said.

“Upgrading the kitchen facilities means the centre’s volunteers can deliver even more daily meals to those in need. Not only does it ensure those people are able to access nutritious meals, but it offers a space where they are greeted by a friendly face and can have regular social interaction with people who care.”

GIDDC’s acting coordinator Jo Cooper said the upgraded facilities will also provide further community benefits including an important meal space during emergency situations, supporting cultural and community celebrations, and more social connections.

“We offer a safe gathering and meeting place where isolated community members can connect, reducing loneliness and building new relationship,” she said.

“Our meals are served in a welcoming respectful environment, so people don’t feel like charity recipients.”

Ms Cooper is also hopeful having expanded facilities will encourage more members of the community to give up their time to lend a hand.

“The new kitchen might entice more community members to contribute through serving, cooking or general kitchen help,” she said.

The GIDCC plans to engage with local businesses to carry out the work and source the equipment.
