Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has congratulated Walcha Tourism for being included as one of 36 destinations to host the 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.
The tour gives communities the chance to see the prestigious Melbourne Cup prize up close.
The $850,000 trophy will begin its journey on 5 June in New York for the Belmont Gold Cup before returning to Australian soil and commencing the domestic tour in Griffith on 19 June.
Last year’s Melbourne Cup-winning horse, Knight’s Choice, was bred by Walcha locals Norm and Diane Bazeley at Elswick Park and, following the triumph, Mr Moylan highlighted their contribution in Parliament.
The Cup Tour will land in Walcha on Friday, 15 August and Mr Moylan said it was a great achievement for the town.
“Walcha has a deep-rooted passion for thoroughbred racing and a proud connection to the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
“The region has produced and supported exceptional equine talent over the years, and many local families have longstanding ties to the racing industry, whether through breeding, training, or competing.
“The Walcha community has faced significant challenges in recent years, most notably due to the prolonged closure of the Oxley Highway, which has dramatically reduced visitor numbers. Local businesses, particularly in hospitality and retail, have struggled with the sharp decline in through traffic and tourism spend.
“Hosting an event of this scale will be a huge boost to the Walcha township.”
Of the 36 tour destinations, 24 are from regional and rural areas.
Each town will be allocated a barrier in the Lexus Melbourne Cup, giving them the chance to win $50,000 for a charity of their choice.
The Walcha and District Historical Society will be the beneficiary, should the horse from their allocated barrier prevail.
