Media Release: Moylan urges locals to be vigilant after mosquito-borne virus detected in Moree

Tuesday, 7 January 2025
Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has urged Moree residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites after the Japanese encephalitis virus was detected in the area.

Results from NSW’s Health mosquito-borne illnesses program show evidence of the virus in mosquitos in the Moree area.

Japanese encephalitis is a rare but serious illness which can be spread by infected mosquitos.

“We know people who work or participate in outside activities are at a higher risk of contracting Japanese encephalitis,” Mr Moylan said.

“Although a severe infection is rare, I encourage everyone in the local community to take care when venturing outdoors by covering up, using insect repellents and nets, and removing stagnant water from around the home.”

Symptoms can appear five to 15 days following a bite from an infected mosquito.

About one in 250 people infected by the virus experience severe symptoms.

Initial indicators include fever, headaches and vomiting while neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, coma, seizures, and paralysis are considered severe.

NSW Health has advised anyone who displays these symptoms to contact a doctor, call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency call 000 or visit your nearest emergency department.
