Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has urged the Federal Government to overturn the decision to deport Bingara’s much-loved Atep family.
The family of 10 moved to Bingara in 2019 after fleeing Papua New Guinea in 2017 due to violent threats made against them.
Petrus and Rosemary work in Bingara and four of their children currently attend Bingara Central School.
Mr Moylan has called for Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Tony Burke, to intervene to keep the Atep family in the community.
“There’s concerns for their welfare if they are to return to Papua New Guinea,” Mr Moylan said.
“This is a well-liked family who contribute to the Bingara community in an extremely positive manner.
“To send to them to a potentially dangerous situation in Papua New Guinea is a cold and callous decision.
“It is incredibly disappointing to hear about the Ateps’ situation and I have written to Minister Burke to ask him to reverse the deportation order.
“I encourage everyone to support the petition and put as much pressure as possible on the Minister to look after this local family.”
A change.org petition has been setup to protest the deportation decision: change.org/p/prevent-the-unjust-deportation-of-the-atep-family
