Historic war memorial to undergo upgrades

Tuesday, 3 February 2026

The Walcha Road War Memorial is an important piece of history for surrounding communities and now it will be more accessible with funding secured through the Community Partnership program.

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan delivered $13,000 to upgrade the stairs and install safety railing

“War memorials, like the one at Walcha Road, honour and commemorate locals who served and lost their lives in war and are an important part of the history of our local area,” Mr Moylan said.

“It is important to ensure they are maintained and accessible so the community can continue to gather and pay tribute to those who served our country.

“The Walcha Road War Memorial is etched with the names of locals who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and it is important they continue to be remembered for years to come.”

Walcha mayor Eric Noakes said the condition of the steps has deteriorated and older residents struggle to get to the war memorial safely.

“This funding is vital to restore access to an important memorial at Walcha Road,” he said.

“With so many veterans and families getting older the current access proved to be very challenging.

“The memorial has become a focal point on both Anzac and Remembrance Days where services are held but also provides an important place for people returning to the area.

“The community wishes to express its appreciation Brendan for his hard work in securing this funding.”
