Angler’s clubs at Moree, Guyra, Deepwater and Inverell are set to build up fish populations in local waterways thanks to funding through the Community Native Fish Stocking (CNFS) Grants Program.
Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan welcomed this week’s announcement of funding which provides $2 funding for every $1 spent by the clubs.
This funding will allow successful applicants to purchase native fish (Australian Bass, Murray Cod, Golden Perch) for release into publicly-accessible rivers and dams across the region.
The successful applicants are:
Inverell – Inverell RSM Fishing Club – $12,000
Moree – Hardman Outdoor Restock – $12,000
Deepwater – Deepwater Freshwater Fishing Club – $6,000
Guyra – Guyra Anglers Club – $4,000
“Fishing is one of the most popular sports in Australia and is one the few recreational activities that can be enjoyed across all ages and abilities,” Mr Moylan said.
“The clubs and enthusiasts that work to maintain healthy fish stocks through this program are to be commended for their efforts in ensuring a healthy native fish population.
“It is also important to acknowledge the important support this funding provides to those accredited regional commercial fish hatcheries from where the fingerling fish must be purchased.
“I’m sure anglers of the local public waterways where these young native fish will be released, will be looking forward to happy fishing in the years to come.”
The program is administered by NSW Fisheries and Forestry using some of the $16 million raised annually through the NSW Recreational Fishing Licence program. More than 400,000 licences are issued each year, with revenue directed toward enhancing fishing in NSW.
