Deano’s Smoked Trout Farm has been a mainstay for aquaculture and tourism in the Northern Tablelands for nearly three decades and now they are set to expand operations thanks to a $175,595 grant that has been secured from the NSW Government’s Aquaculture Industry Development Program.
The funding program is aimed at supporting regional aquaculture businesses to increase farmgate production and capability.
Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan visited the farm recently to congratulate owner Dean Williams and tour the 10-acre facility.
Mr Moylan who said the funding that has been secured will go a long way in bettering the farm’s infrastructure to improve water efficiency, increase productivity and improve environmental management.
“Deano’s Trout Farm is a fantastic, state-of-the-art facility at Black Mountain, near Guyra, which has a Rainbow Trout and Atlantic Salmon hatchery, spring water growing dams and a recreational dam for tourists,” Mr Moylan said.
“Over the years Deano has grown the facility into what it is today which is productive and a great place for people to visit. He also produces award winning smoked trout and dips which are sold all over NSW and Queensland. He has really put the region on the map.
“The $175,575 grant will only add to that by expanding the commercial operation with a new purpose-built hatchery facility, a water recirculation system and solar pump for the eight breeding ponds which house around 160,000 fish, an excavator for maintenance and tanks for repurposing waste into farm fertiliser.
“It is great to see a diverse, local business growing and continuing to do the region proud.”
“I’m really pleased with this funding win.”
