Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has appealed to the NSW Government for more support to businesses in Walcha, who have seen a massive decrease in revenue after multiple closures to the Oxley Highway due to landslips.
Mr Moylan addressed NSW Parliament last week in a Private Members’ Statement and outlined the flow-on effect the last six years’ worth of closures have had on small businesses who rely on tourist traffic for much of their income.
He acknowledged there has been continual work on the Oxley Highway but asked the Government to look at the wider impact of weather events.
“The Government is well aware of the challenges we are facing but it is important to consider the broader impacts of recent weather events, particularly those affecting the Walcha business community,” Mr Moylan said.
“The Oxley Highway has experienced closures on and off for the last six years which has halted tourist traffic through the small community of Walcha.
“Many of the community’s shops and businesses need traffic moving through the town to continue to survive.
“I have written to and spoken with Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib, and Minister for Small Business and Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin about the six-year battle Walcha businesses have been facing.
“Given the large number of landslips in the most recent weather event, it is likely they will have to endure another tough 12 months, or even longer.
“It is no one’s fault but the consequences for local shops and businesses are serious.
“While some efforts are being made, more support is urgently needed and I am committed to ensuring the Government gives this matter the attention it deserves.”
